The allure of Lurex

Zenija Esmits

If you have visions of Studio 54 dancing in your head you know about lurex. This shimmering metallic yarn was invented in the early mid-century but is still very much in vogue. In fact, with style lines blurring between day and night, what was once perhaps exclusively an evening fabric is now very wearable everyday. Below are some of our favorite lurex pieces ranging from twirly skirts to your new favorite overcoat.

Haute to Trot

The Paris Haute Couture shows just ended and as with other Fashion Weeks there were definitely some stand-out trends.

Puff Sleeves:
From the exaggerated 80's to the regal Romanovs - full sleeves blew up at almost all the Haute Couture shows. The sizes, shapes and fabric varied but the theme remained the same.

Barely There:
Sheer dresses that showcase the wearers undergarments (should they choose to wear any) have been hitting the runways for several seasons and don't seem to be going anywhere. One of the few trends that has made it to Hollywood and its runway; the red carpet.

Exposed Shoulders:
Haute couture gave us the cold shoulder once again. This time around draped silhouettes were favored which made for a subtle sexiness.

Ruffs:
This historical trend appeared in a few ways on the catwalk. Vaguely Victorian to overtly Elizabethan, ruffles framed the faces of countless models.

88th Academy Awards

Coincidently some of the best looks at last night's Oscars were also the most interesting. In a sea of purple strapless gowns there were a select few fashion choices that stood out. Boboli favorites; Valentino and Stella McCartney hit the red carpet and Giambattista Valli made it to the Vanity Fair after party.

What They Wore

The hugely anticipated Star Wars 7 opened a month ago. Naturally there were premiers and photocalls a-plenty for the stars of Star Wars - The Force Awakens. It seems some of our favorite designers played a stylish part in the wardrobe choices by two of the film's biggest names.

From L to R: Daisy Ridley in Roland Mouret, Lupita Nyong'o in Roland Mouret, Daisy Ridley in Giambattista Valli and again in Moncler.

Musings & Muses - Giambattista Valli

Zenija Esmits

This month's W Magazine is highlighting Giambattista Valli in a big way. With not only an editorial spread but also short videos featuring some of the designer's friends and muses. The Valli Girls (as they are referred to) talk about favorite pieces, inspiration and personal style icons.
